These activities are free to SVFAL members.

SVFAL's first A.I.R. is RHANNA NYMAN. Rhanna has a B.F.A. from The Cleveland Institute of Art, and has been a full time professional mixed media artist for 25 years. She has exhibited her distinctive fiber/mixed media pieces across the country, and in the last handful of years has expanded her arts business to include workshops, website design and creative facilitation. We welcome Rhanna and the energy and skills she brings to the Red House!

Third Saturdays

Tackle art related issues in 2 hour workshops that cover subjects such as: How do I display/frame my work?, How do I write an artist statement?, Is social media worth my time?, and more!

October 20th from 9:30-11:30

October’s educational THIRD SATURDAY will focus on taking effective pics for SOCIAL MEDIA on your cellphone. Bring your cellphone, pen & small pad of paper, and your sense of adventure! This will be an interactive session where we will be taking cellphone pictures and learning about editing pics on a cellphone. We will be creating fun, engaging posts as we go, and talking about ways to increase the reach of posts with hashtags! This is a great chance to learn about effective social media posting and update your social media skills. See you there!

This session will be lead by our Artist in Residence and is free to members. $15 suggested donation for non-members.

Still Life Drawing Sessions

SET UP IN PLACE every TUESDAY at 10:00 thru WEDNESDAY at 5:00

Tuesday mornings at 10:00 the door on the SVFAL drawing studio is now opened to a visually engaging and creatively challenging still life. The set up remains in place until 5:00 on Wednesday. Bring your drawing or painting materials and use the still life to bone up on your visual skills, or use the still life as the subject for a finished work of art.

This is a self directed session that is suitable for beginning to advanced artists. Our AIR will swing through once in the mornings and once in the afternoons. If you would like feedback on your work - just ask.

A picture of the weekly still life set up will appear shortly after 10:00 on Tuesday on the leagues Facebook and Instagram accounts.

The Casual Critique

A weekly session that gives you the chance to present your artwork, in-process or finished, for feedback in a group setting.

Wednesdays from 2:00–3:00 in The Red House classroom

Having your work critiqued, and participating in the critique of others work, is an invaluable way to grow your creative toolbox and develop verbal skills that allow you to comfortably present your work to the public. These positive results are amplified by critiques that focus on questions rather than judgements. To that end, these sessions will be facilitated by our A.I.R. so as to encourage the development of your unique visual language through answering and asking of process and concept based questions.

Attendance, with or without work to share, is welcome – if no one brings work, we will have fun critiquing work from other sources.

A weekly art business forum designed to address the myriad issues involved in getting your creative work in front of a buying audience.

The 2nd and 4th Monday Mornings of each month from 8:45-9:45 in The Red House classroom

This bi-weekly forum offers you answers to your questions about the art business.  Each week the topic will be determined by the participant’s experiences and needs. Questions will be generated by the participants, with the A.I.R. providing information, assistance in developing business problem solving skills and focused roundtable discussion. This is a great chance to learn the ropes of selling art, work through business issues, or develop plans for taking your art business to the next level. Bring your pen, paper, and a cup of coffee and start your week off with a dose of inspiration and empowerment!

You do not need to sign up for this forum; you just need to show up. You can participate regularly, or come when the need arises.

We now have a second version of BIZMO on the 1st and 3rd Monday Mornings of each month from 8:45-9:45 in The Red House classroom - these sessions are oriented towards those developing an arts education based business.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday, October 16th at 11:00 in The Red House classroom.

Join us for an inspiring look at arts!

In this group we will be reading books about art and discussing issues the books cover - as they relate to visual artists. This is intended to help build our visual vocabularies, develop the context in which we see our art and the art world, and to help us better represent what we do as artists to the public.

Our first book is FREE PLAY by Stephen Nachmanovitch.

Free Play is about the inner sources of spontaneous creation. It is about where art in the widest sense comes from. It is about why we create and what we learn when we do. It is about the flow of unhindered creative energy: the joy of making art in all its varied forms.”

Free Play is directed toward people in any field who want to contact, honor, and strengthen their own creative powers. It integrates material from a wide variety of sources among the arts, sciences, and spiritual traditions of humanity. Filled with unusual quotes, amusing and illuminating anecdotes, and original metaphors, it reveals how inspiration arises within us, how that inspiration may be blocked, derailed or obscured by certain unavoidable facts of life, and how finally it can be liberated - how we can be liberated - to speak or sing, write or paint, dance or play, with our own authentic voice.”

This is a relatively small book and a quick and fun read. Try to read the first half of the book by the next meeting.
