LOIS STEELE is a self-taught artist who has always had a deep appreciation of the natural world. She moved to Western North Carolina in 1987, and works in multiple disciplines, including drawing, painting, wood carving and sculpture. On a trip to San Miguel, Mexico, in 2005, Lois discovered the ancient art of Paper Mache which has inspired sculptures that she further enhances with encaustic finishes. Constructing the wire armatures for the sculptures led to an increasing fascination with the wire itself as a means to convey the movement and the spirit of the beings she creates.
